Carretera Austral –or Austral
road, covers 1,240 kilometers and on its way among mountains
and cliffs, dense and ancient native forests of coigüe,
notro, lenga, and giant nalcas, rivers, and waterfalls of crystal
clear waters where you can often see pairs of native birds,
such as caiquenes and flocks of bandurrias, or ibis.
The Carretera Austral Highway begins
in Puerto Montt and ends in Villa O’Higgins, close to the
Southern Ice Fields. Driving the Carretera Austral, a mostly
graveled highway through and area that was nearly roadless 20
years ago, is an adventure. Drivers and cyclists agree that
it´s one of South Americas most scenic roads. Sights
as the native forest of Pumalin Park, the hanging glaciers of
the Queulat National park, the horns of Cerro Castillo National
Reserva and the sapphire water of Lago General Carrrera are part
of this scenery road.
